Cypriots commit to settlement

2008.6.10 – 17:22

Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday issued a joint statement expressing their commitment to the creation of a bizonal federation on the island, assuaging fears that the Turkish side had been considering a two-state settlement.

The statement issued by the two men referred to “a federal government” comprising “a constituent Turkish-Cypriot state and a constituent Greek-Cypriot state of equal status”. The same declaration confirmed that the two community leaders had “an open and productive discussion” and reviewed the outcome of their previous talks on March 21. The two men reportedly ordered their representatives to examine the progress of ongoing discussions by working technical groups from both sides within the next 15 days.

According to the same statement, these representatives will examine the possibility of developing “political and military trust-building measures” between the two sides. They will also seek the opening of the Limniti barricade and other crossings following the historic decision in March to open up Ledra Street in the divided capital of Nicosia.

As for Christofias and Talat, they decided they would have their next face-to-face meeting in the second half of June “for a fresh assessment”. Until then, Christofias told reporters, it was imperative for both sides to make intensive efforts to bridge the difficulties being faced by the working groups. “We are intent on finding a solution, this has to become clear” Christofias said.

Talat said the two men would discuss at their next meeting when to move ahead with fresh peace talks. Talat’s comments came just a day after Cyprus government officials expressed fears that Ankara foresees the creation of two separate states on Cyprus. The concerns were provoked by a recent statement by Turkey’s National Security Council referring to “the existence of two separate peoples and two democracies” on the island.

City life becomes a drag for Greeks

2008.6.10 – 17:22

Poll shows even non-Athenian urbanites unhappy with their surroundings > The majority of Greeks living in large cities other than Athens are not satisfied with their quality of life because they are bothered by an array of problems, ranging from a lack of parking spaces to unemployment, according to a new poll.

The survey questioned residents of Ioannina, Volos, Larissa, Iraklion, Hania, Patras, Kavala, Serres, Thessaloniki and Piraeus and indicates that they are unhappy with their daily lives in these cities. Only Hania, Larissa and Ioannina could boast a majority of residents who were pleased with their cities.

Overall, 46 percent of these cities’ residents were pessimistic about the future because they feel that life in the urban centers is getting worse. According to the collated results of the poll, 48 percent of respondents feel that traffic is the biggest problem in their city. This is followed by 15 percent who are troubled the most by unemployment. Another 15 percent are worried about cleanliness and 13 percent about pollution. Nine in 10 city residents said that parking was “a very big problem”. Eight in 10 say that life is too expensive, while 71 percent believe that their city is heavily polluted.

Three-quarters of those questioned feel that there are not enough open spaces, such as parks and squares. However, most city residents were upbeat about the entertainment facilities and nightlife on offer. Eight in 10 said that their city gives them ample opportunities to have a good time. Larissa comes top of this category, with 91 percent of locals expressing satisfaction about the city’s nightlife.

The results of the survey, conducted by Public Issue on behalf of Kathimerini daily, were in line with the findings of a similar poll conducted in Athens last month. That survey had suggested that two in three Athenians are unhappy with life in the capital and believe conditions have deteriorated over the past few years due to increased traffic congestion, inadequate garbage disposal and rising air pollution.

New playwright and veteran director present “La Poupee”

2008.6.10 – 17:22

Anna Kokkinou, the actress-director stars in Vangelis Hatziyannidis’ “La Poupee”

Vangelis Hatziyannidis started out as a novelist, before being named Best New Author by Diavazo [I Read] Magazine. Now his one-act play “La Poupee” is on stage at the Sfendoni Theater, marking the playwright’s significant collaboration with Anna Kokkinou.

A black comedy based on a monologue, the play is directed by Kokkinou, who also stars as Rika, a highly gifted seamstress of doll dresses. Using vintage buttons and fabrics, Rika seems to be stuck in a state of unnatural childishness and has great difficulty when it comes to understanding the rest of the world. When something or somebody hurts her, she turns into somebody who can be very scary.

“La Poupee” is currently on stage at the Sfendoni Theater for a limited set of performances. According to the actress-director, the character she interprets is an adult who has experienced great pain, an adult who has never really grown up and who goes after her worse enemy: hatred. Using all her energy and power, Rika resists the sweet seduction of jealous thoughts and vindictiveness. The production’s set design and lighting is by Nikos Alexiou, costumes by Christina Mathea, choreographies by Mariella Nestora and music by Stella Gadedi.

Sfendoni Theater, 4 Makri Street, Makriyianni, Athens, tel 210 9245592 (Wednesdays-Sundays).

Greece vs Hungary > one youngster makes seniors

2008.6.10 – 17:22

Coach Rehhagel picks Papastathopoulos for Greece’s friendly against Hungary this Saturday

Sotiris Ninis celebrated after scoring in his senior-level international debut against Cyprus in Monday’s 2-0 win. Ninis, 18, became the youngest ever scorer for Greece.

Coach Otto Rehhagel has named a 24-man squad for Greece’s next friendly game against Hungary in Budapest this Saturday, three weeks before Greece’s opening game at Euro 2008 against Sweden. There were no surprises. Of the young players selected for Monday’s friendly against Cyprus, which Greece won 2-0, only AEK central defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos made the squad for Saturday’s game in Budapest. Barring injuries, few changes are expected to be made for Greece’s squad at the Euro finals. However, one cut will need to be made to meet the 23-player limit.

Sotiris Ninis, who on Monday became the youngest Greece international ever to score at the age of 18 years and one month, was left out of Rehhagel’s squad for Saturday’s friendly against Hungary. Rehhagel is obviously considering Ninis for the squad that will contest the World Cup qualifying group from September. The youngster, who made his senior-level international debut on Monday, opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he latched on to a through ball from Dimitris Salpiggidis. Ninis played confidently for 45 minutes before being substituted at halftime. Costas Katsouranis made it 2-0 in the 59th minute from the penalty spot.

Writing in an idyllic setting on Andros island

2008.6.10 – 17:22

Participants in the Aegean Arts Circle creative writing workshop stay in rooms overlooking the pool and the sea at the Andros Holiday Hotel. If you write fiction and have a manuscript you want to take to the next stage, why not take it to a creative writing workshop in an idyllic island setting?

For the sixth summer, the Aegean Arts Circle on Andros island is offering writers a chance to immerse themselves in every aspect of the creative process. The Aegean Arts Circle, run by Amalia Melis, gives you private time to write, feedback in small groups, and all in the luxury of a single room with a sea view at the beautiful Andros Holiday Hotel.

Award-winning author and instructor Connie May Fowler will be back on Andros for a second time to lead an eight-day writing workshop, July 7-14. Fowler’s most recent work, “The Problem with Murmer Lee” was published by Doubleday (2005) and Broadway Books (2006) and was a Redbook premier book club selection.

Writers attending the workshop will examine their own work and that of the other participants, looking at issues such as point-of-view, character arc and pacing, and the needs of the participating writers. General topics of concern for working writers, such as finding an agent, how to keep the muse by your side, and revision tactics, will also be discussed. The approach is honest and constructive. Writing about her previous experience at the Aegean Arts Circle, Fowler commends Melis for creating “a magical mix of contemplative study and joyful communion in a place of breathtaking vistas. And let us not forget the Greek cuisine and good cheer that fortify body and soul”.
